Lincoln did not mention details of the battle but instead spoke of the “final resting place” that those people came to sanctify. He mentioned how tough it is to deal with a long war even for a nation that is “conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal” (Lincoln). Lincoln knew of the pain and displeasure that the crowd was feeling after such a long and tiring war with so many losses. This is also an example of Lincoln making the crowd feel obligated to fight for the sacrifices of the fallen soldiers. It is for us, the living, rather to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far nobly advanced” (Lincoln). Another example when Lincoln makes the audience feel compassionate for the fallen men at Gettysburg is when he says: “The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. This inspires the audience to honor the sacrifices of the military, and reminds them that they are the true heroes. He tells them that they have made the ultimate sacrifice by giving up their lives for a noble cause, and there is no way a living person can pay that back with just words, and no action. He makes the audience feel compassionate for the people who have witnessed and endured this costly battle. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract” (Lincoln). “But in a larger sense, we cannot dedicate- we cannot consecrate- we cannot hallow- this ground. Lincoln meant his speech to be a smaller part of a bigger picture which was to make the crowd feel obligated to fight for the sacrifices of the fallen soldiers. This honorific language incites powerful emotions by making the audience feel prideful and appreciative of the soldier’s sacrifices. He is extremely effective in appealing to the audience’s emotion by using respectful language such as “nobly,” “devotion,” “hallow,” and “honored”. For example, he says: “We are met on a great battle-field”, “We are engaged in a great civil war”, “We have come to dedicate”, “We should do this”. Abraham Lincoln uses many small common words such as the word “we” instead of “I” or “you” to unite the audience. He evoked emotions such as sadness, admiration, humbleness, rejuvenation and commemoration. It was very easy for Abraham Lincoln to use pathos in his speech to remember the fallen soldiers, and comfort the audience. The setting and the audience were very emotional coming off a battle that left 8,000 men dead. President Abraham Lincoln does an outstanding job of using pathos in his speech. Although Lincoln’s job was to deliver a few remarks after Edward Everett’s grand speech, he delivered a speech full of rhetoric that will be remembered forever. The author of the speech is Abraham Lincoln who was the President of the United States at the time. The purpose was not to celebrate a Union victory or criticize the South, but to honor the battle by reminding people that the soldiers fought for freedom and equality. The “Gettysburg Address” was a tribute to all the fallen soldiers at the Battle of Gettysburg during the Civil War. The audience that Abraham Lincoln intended his speech for was the whole nation. It is important to understand the rhetorical situation before analyzing the rhetorical appeals. The “Gettysburg Address” given by Abraham Lincoln at Gettysburg on November 19, 1863, is a prime example of a speech that uses pathos, ethos and logos. Pathos appeals to emotion, ethos is the use of character, and logos appeals to reason. There are three proofs of rhetoric which are pathos, ethos, and logos. Rhetorical Analysis of Lincoln’s “Gettysburg Address”Įssays, speeches and advertisements all have one thing in common, and that is rhetorical appeals. Racial and sexual slurs are allowed, racist and sexist entries are not." Īt the start of 2014, 32-year-old Peckham resided in San Francisco, U.S, and, while he did not reveal exact figures, he informed the media that the site was "stable and growing", and generated enough profit for both him and the site's maintenance. Reject nonsense, inside jokes or anything submitted in capital letters. In an April 2011 article in The Guardian titled "In praise of urban dictionaries", Peckham revealed an overview of 10 rules that he had devised for the site's content: "Publish celebrity names, but reject 'real life' names. Over a 30-day period in March and April 2011, 67,000 people wrote 76,000 new definitions for Urban Dictionary, while 3,500 volunteer editors were registered. The website was later referenced in a 2011 District Court complaint by Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) agents to document the meaning of the vulgarism "murk", as used in a criminal threat. In July 2009, Peckham explained to The New York Times that Urban Dictionary is not Wikipedia, because it doesn't attempt neutrality: "Every single word on here is written by someone with a point of view, with a personal experience of the word in the entry." In April 2009, the site registered 15 million unique visitors, while 80 percent of its monthly users were younger than 25. īy 2009, the site had listed around 4 million entries and received about 2,000 new submissions per day. In 2003, the website gained wider attention after a news article revealed that a judge of the High Court of Justice in the United Kingdom had used Urban Dictionary to assist interpreting slang lyrics in a case involving two rappers. He created Urban Dictionary initially as a parody of actual dictionaries, which he thought tended to be "stuffy" and "take themselves too seriously".įor the first five years, the site generated revenue but did not make a profit. He had previously created a spoof version of the Ask Jeeves web search engine while studying at Cal Poly but closed the website after he received an infringement letter. He launched the site to compare urban slang used by university students in different parts of California. The site was founded in 1999 by Aaron Peckham while he was a freshman computer science major at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. As of 2014, the dictionary contains over seven million definitions, while around 2,000 new entries were being added daily. Words or phrases on Urban Dictionary may have multiple definitions, usage examples, and tags. Originally, Urban Dictionary was intended as a dictionary of slang or cultural words and phrases, not typically found in standard English dictionaries, but it is now used to define any word, event, or phrase (including sexually explicit content). The website was founded in 1999 by Aaron Peckham. Urban Dictionary is a crowdsourced English-language online dictionary for slang words and phrases. A musician with an advanced engineering degree, he recorded and analyzed the sounds, then played them back upon his return home, where he discovered that the ocean and its crashing waves seamlessly masked the whoosh of the cars. For instance, ASTI, maker of the Sound+Sleep and the LectroFan, was born when its founder noticed while on a trip to the beach that the sound of the ocean reminded him of the freeway noises outside his home (but more relaxing). But they may also mask offending noises, if they're similar enough. If you happen to find these sounds soothing, they might help you sleep or focus. Some white noise machines, such as the Sound+Sleep, also offer real-world sounds like that of rain, river, and ocean waves. However, if you have the sort of tinnitus that sounds like ringing in your ears, the steady, higher-frequency sound of white or blue noise may offer relief. That’s inefficient and unkind to your ears. In contrast, white noise, whose sound graph is a straight, horizontal line, won’t block the high-intensity low frequencies of a garbage truck until you ramp up the volume. For instance, the rumble of garbage trucks, the sound graph for which looks like a downward slope (as long as the X axis is linear), is handily masked by brown noise even at a relatively low volume, because brown noise is characterized by a lot of low frequencies and a similar downward-sloping sound graph. But a smarter way to mask noise is to choose the color with higher intensity in the frequencies matching that of the noise you’re trying to block, explained sound engineer Stéphane Pigeon. The white, pink, and brown noises you tend to find in sound generators can all mask annoying sounds to varying degrees, if you turn the volume up enough. To understand how noises mask each other, we spent hours talking on the phone and emailing with Stéphane Pigeon, PhD, a sound engineer specializing in white noise and the creator of myNoise, our favorite white noise app. (ASTI), the maker of two of our picks, the LectroFan EVO and the Sound+Sleep. We also interviewed UPenn scientist Mathias Basner, MD, PhD, a professor of sleep and chronobiology in the department of psychiatry who co-authored a clinical review of studies on the use of white noise as a sleep aid, as well as Stanford University sleep researcher Rafael Pelayo, MD, author of How to Sleep: The New Science-Based Solutions for Sleeping Through the Night and a medical consultant to Adaptive Sound Technologies Inc. To learn what features to look for in white noise machines, we spoke with Michael Perlis, PhD, director of the behavioral sleep medicine program at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine whose work includes studying the use of white noise machines in treating insomnia. Best results in major championships (wins: 1) The suspension vendors might be able to provide the necessary documentation required by the inspectors. If you are planning to change the rear suspension, there are vendors that provide the suspension upgrades that includes new frame rails that will accept wider tires. The frame rail flange is very close at the rear of the existing tub. It has a flange on the frame rail that is bent outwards. The 1969 model stock shock position is very close to the factory tub. Dutton makes a good point about the shock tower. The flange is the part that has many shiny circles that are cut spot welds. The center flange that I am talking about is shown in the photo below. That would be a lot of welding and grinding to make the seams go away. The modification would be invisible.Ĭutting the tub in the middle and adding a strip of sheet metal would require two seams that need to be butt welded together. Take the tub out of the car and bend a new flange using the line as the bend vertex. Then I would mark a long line where the excess metal overlays the outer wheel house. I would cut the center flange off the new tub and fit the tub inside the car. The price and shipping would be an important factor. I would buy either the Dynacorn or Goodmark tub. I know the Dynacorn does not come with the pieces that covers the frame rail notches. You would be buying extra patch metal that you won't need. The DSE tubs come with extra parts to cover the frame rail that has been notched. So need to do this without notching the rails. Otherwise all sorts of headaches will follow. Do it right and do it legal.with their approval. These engineers have seen guys trying to dodge the rules to get cars on roads for years.they are all over it. And to comment on the other post about doing it anyway.our engineers in australia KNOW when you do stuff. To be honest - I am still a little confused as to the best option to widen WITHOUT touching rails. That could work, but would be less fabrication in buying a wider tub that simply fits.be good to get the 100% confirmed.Ĭan anyone add any final comments on this subject to close it out? Others mention cutting and moving the existing tub back to the chassis and creating a filler panel to close the gap. Other comments here infer the 2" can be muscled and finessed to work without modifying the rails? So out of the 3, would seem the Dynacorn unit is the smallest offering, but if you believe what some websites state, that also need notching of the frame rails. So if the description is accurate - you would think the goodmark unit is WIDER than the Dynacorn unit? **Seems to indicate that it is 2 1/4" wider tub. We know the DSE tubs definitely require notching Images looked like they were pulled from the Dynacorn site, so if that is right - camaro central are saying frame rails need to be altered for the Dynacorn unit. ***Note they mention frame rails also need to be modded on this 2" tub option.Īlthough the specs and dimensions closely resemble this: I also notice on Camaro central - they advertise the following: Some people are saying Dynacorn is wider than DSE, others think otherwise. I have been reading around.various forums. I am not greedy with my wheel rubber like some others ) I would be happy enough running a 10" wide that did not rub on anything - that would honestly be plenty for me. This mod does not cut the frame and provides some extra clearance for a 10" wheel.Ĭan the wheel tub width be increased to accommodate a 10" wheel without messing with the frame?įor the record I have the Ridetech 4-link installed, so got all that covered from the suspension side of things. I have also seen other comments about people moving the tub back to the rail, gaining some clearances and essentially fabricating a panel to fill the gap. ideally I would like to avoid this for the previously mentioned reasons. Also costs a lot of money to get these approvals.ĭSE tubs seem to be the clear choice, but I can see you need to notch the frame a little to install them. There are a lot of hoops to jump through, and engineering approvals required, before you can legally drive a vehicle with structural modifications on the road here. In australia, notching or cutting frame rails is a bit of a "no, no". Obviously I understand mini-tubs can provide the clearances I would need to run a 10"+ tyre. I am considering a wider rear wheel option for my Camaro project. I have searched the forums for a definitive answer, but just wanted confirmation I have the right of it. Love, love, love that y’all showed up for me & whoever is touched by this story to see you this way!!! None of this “lovefest” would have happened without y’all. Īlmost last, but certainly not least…Janis Joplin, the Queen of Queens & my Mom, Ruth Hall. My fantastic webmaster, Damien Sterling, took a few pics & words I sent him & look what his genius created! So grateful to have found you. To my dear childhood friend, Bob Fuller, whose insights, ideas & “hand-holding” while digging into all this & well, my goodness, can’t be explained really. Below are a couple, one from Laura to Herman in 2010, confirming that Janis indeed was the artist of “The Purple Painting.” The fact that Laura was the one that orchestrated the painting being hung in The Grammy Museum as part of the 2010 “Strange Kozmic Experience: The Doors, Janis Joplin & Jimi Hendrix” is enough proof right there! The other one from Michael, Janis’ brother, telling of his knowledge of the painting & the story behind it’s creation. Although we did not communicate much, I totally understand & am grateful for the emails we exchanged. To Michael & Laura Joplin, thank you for being you. Jeff Jampol, owner/founder of & manager of Janis Joplin’s estate, was instrumental in getting some of the photographs of Janis to me that you see on this website. 57 in the paperback edition where she mentions my Mom, Ruth Hall, and the commission of “The Purple Painting.” She has been beyond kind & supportive to me & I am very grateful for her assistance. What great things can I tell you about Holly George-Warren, two-time Grammy nominee and award-winning author of sixteen books, including the latest book of Janis called “Janis: Her Life and Music”?!! Below, see photos of the front & back cover of that book & a photo of p. To view the documentation she provided proving this is click here. Robin Green, Registrar/Assistant to Senior Curator The Museum at Bethel Woods, where Janis’ sister Laura Joplin, was instrumental in getting “The Purple Painting” hung in 2011, has been invaluable & always super nice. Since Janis did not do that age 23, I have done my homework & compiled an overwhelming body of evidence proving Janis Joplin is indeed the artist of “The Purple Painting” And had an incredible experience of love & support along the way! The attorney, who specializes in art, said that in the United States, the only time a Certificate of Authenticity is issued is when it comes from the artist. ( ) He provided me with an expert art attorney’s explanation of a Certificate of Authenticity. Arthur, currently an awesome artist in NY. I got some fantastic help, advice & a new friend in Frank Born, also from Pt. I never had one iota of doubt that Janis painted this painting & here are some documents & emails that will confirm the same for anyone. I am beyond amazed that “little ‘ole me” has a history as rich and fascinating as I do. Janis is known around the world as “The Queen of Rock & Roll, Pearl, a musical legend, an icon…”, but she was first an artist and poet. Now, over 50 years since its creation, I would like to sell it. And got divorced and moved some more! That painting has been a part of my life since I was a little girl. I moved and moved and got married to a corporate guy and moved some more. I didn’t take the painting then but came back a few months later and took it on the first leg of it’s long journey. I graduated from high school in 1974 and moved to Austin, TX. Hence, the nickname “The Purple Painting.” The painting is is in various shades of purple. Holly George-Warren, author of “Janis: Her Life and Music”, told me Janis’ favorite color was purple. This happened 54 years ago and since Janis and my Mother died in 1970, some things are just not known. Since Janis was taking an art class at Lamar Tech, I figure that is where she painted it. On one of Karleen and Janis’ visits, Janis was talking about needing some money, so my Mother told her she would buy one of her paintings. I was a “hippie-in-training!” Who knew?!! I don’t remember Janis specifically, but I LOVED sitting around with these guys. They were a fun-loving group of creative and free-thinking intellectuals that came over and talked for hours. Arthur was a big sports town and Janis, like my Mother and their “tribe”, weren’t into sports, but music, dance and art. Karleen’s brother, Herman, told me last year that my Mother was a “safe haven, beacon of light & wonderful friend” to a group of younger folks that were labeled as “black sheep, bohemians or beatniks.” Pt. One of Janis’ best friends, Karleen Bennett, told me she, Janis and other friends used to come over for visits. During that time, Janis and my Mother became friends and carpooled to Lamar Tech in Beaumont, about 15-20 miles from Pt. Then she left for San Francisco and fame. She left, but came back in 1965 and stayed until 1966. Janis graduated from the same high school as all of us in 1960. Yu Yu Hakusho live-action will premiere on Netflix on Dec.
